India and New Zealand collaborate in pharma, agriculture, food processing

India and New Zealand will likely set up working groups in sectors such as agriculture, food processing, storage & transportation, forestry, digital trade and pharmaceuticals to facilitate ongoing collaboration on key trade and economic issues.

  • Collaboration in the area of pharmaceuticals and medical devices sector:
    • Adoption of fast-tracking of the regulatory process.
    • Quality assessment of manufacturing facilities using. 
    • Inspection reports of comparable overseas regulators
    • Greater sourcing of medicines from India and cooperation in the medical device sector.
  • Cooperation in the horticulture sector:
    • Increasing cooperation in kiwi fruit as well as the dairy sector. 
    • Proper storage in pack houses and their suitable transportation. 
    • India and New Zealand will review the progress made by those working groups and the recommendations thereof at regular intervals.
  • Collaboration in digital trade, meeting nationally determined contributions, cross-border payment systems, etc.
  • Bilateral trade issues:
    • Issues related to market access:
      • Non-tariff barriers (NTBs),
      • Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures on products like grapes, okra and mangoes,
      • Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) in organic products, 
      • Simplified homologation including through mutual recognition of comparable domestic vehicles standards.
  • The two sides decided to resolve these issues through dialogue and cooperation under the existing mechanism of the Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting.
