Exercise Samudra Laksamana between Indian Navy and Royal Malaysian Navy  is underway from 28 Feb - 02 Mar 24 at/ off Visakhapatnam.

  • Indian Naval Ship Kiltan and Royal Malaysian Ship KD Lekir are participating in the 3rd edition of this exercise which has harbour professional interactions followed by the operational phase at sea.
  • At harbour, crew of both ships will have various professional interactions, Subject Matter Expert Exchange on topics of mutual interest, sports fixtures, and other interactions.
    • These interactions are aimed to enhance knowledge base, share best practices and further cooperation on maritime aspects.
  • During the sea phase, units would be jointly honing skills while conducting various operations at sea.
  • The exercise aims to strengthen bonds and enhance interoperability between the Indian and Royal Malaysian Navy.

INS Kiltan

  • Indigenously built, INS Kiltan is one of the four Kamorta class Corvettes designed by Indian Navy’s in-house organisation.
  •  As a part of Project 28, INS Kiltan was built as an anti-submarine warfare corvette by Garden Reach Shipbuilders in Kolkata.
  • The ship is named after a coral island that is a part of the Aminidivi archipelago which is located in the Lakshadweep and Minicoy group of islands.
  • Kiltan is India’s first major naval ship to contain a superstructure of carbon fibre composite material. 
    • This feature leads to a lower cost of maintenance while permitting more enhanced stealth features.
  • The warship showcases the usage of advanced engineering materials and the significant improvement it has led to, as evident by its enhanced stability parameters and top speed.
