APEDA facilitates the export of bananas from India to Russia via sea

A consignment of 1,540 boxes of bananas was flagged off from Maharashtra by the APEDA Chairman.

About the news:

  • The notable feature of this consignment is that APEDA has collaborated with the Central Institute of Subtropical Horticulture (CISH) to develop a sea protocol that has been employed for this shipment to maintain the quality of fruit in transit.
  • Banana is a major agricultural import of Russia, which is presently primarily being imported from the Latin American country Ecuador.
  • Amidst a growing dispute with Ecuador, Russia has started purchasing bananas and papayas from India.
  • India’s export share in the global market is only 1% whereas it accounts for 26.45% of the world’s banana production (35.36 million tonnes). India had exported 0.36 million tonnes (mt) of bananas worth $ 176 million in 2022-23.
  • The major export destinations for Indian bananas include Iran, Iraq, UAE, Oman, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Afghanistan, and the Maldives. 
  • Apart from Andhra Pradesh, Banana is also grown widely in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh. These five states collectively contribute around 67% of India’s total production.

About APEDA:

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry was established by the Government of India under the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Act,1985.

Functions:

  • Development of industries relating to the scheduled products for export by way of providing financial assistance.
  • Registration of persons as exporters of the scheduled products on payment of such fees as may be prescribed.
  • Fixing of standards and specifications for the scheduled products for exports.
  • Improving of packaging of the Scheduled products.
  • Improving of marketing of the Scheduled products outside India.
  • Promotion of export-oriented production and development of the Scheduled products.

  • Meat and Meat Products.
  • Poultry and Poultry Products.
  • Dairy Products.
  • Groundnuts, Peanuts, and Walnuts.
  • Pickles, Papads, and Chutneys.

  • Floriculture and Floriculture Products.
  • Herbal and Medicinal Plants.
  • Basmati Rice has been included in the Second Schedule of the APEDA Act.
  • In addition to this, APEDA has been entrusted with the responsibility of monitoring the import of sugar as well.

About CISH (Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture):

  • Started - 1972
  • The institute has 2 experimental farms at Raebareli and Lucknow.
  • The institute has the largest field gene bank of mango (775) in the world.
