Indigenously developed Hepatitis A vaccine

Vaccine maker Indian Immunologicals Ltd (IIL) launched the country’s first indigenously developed Hepatitis A vaccine.

About the Vaccine:

  • The vaccine ‘Havisure’ represents a significant step forward in India’s fight against Hepatitis A and is poised to make a substantial contribution to public health.
  • Havisure will be manufactured at IIL’s Gachibowli plant in Hyderabad. 
  • It is a two-dose vaccine; first dose administered at above 12 months of age and the second at least six months after the first dose. 
  • IIL said the vaccine is recommended for children as part of the routine immunization as well as for individuals at risk of exposure or travel to the regions with high hepatitis A prevalence. 

About Indian Immunologicals Ltd (IIL):

  • Indian Immunologicals (IIL) was established by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in 1982, as its unit, with the objective of making vaccines available to farmers at an affordable price. 
  • The unit was corporatized as Indian Immunologicals Limited in the year 1999.
  • IIL started manufacturing human vaccines in 1998 on a specific request by the Government of India.
  • IIL is the second company in the world and first in India to launch purified vero cell rabies vaccine (PVRV) and markets it under the brand – Abhayrab

  • Hepatitis A is an inflammation of the liver that can cause mild to severe illness.
  • The hepatitis A virus (HAV) is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food and water or through direct contact with an infectious person.
  • Almost everyone recovers fully from hepatitis A with a lifelong immunity. However, a very small proportion of people infected with hepatitis A could die from fulminant hepatitis.
  • The risk of hepatitis A infection is associated with a lack of safe water and poor sanitation and hygiene (such as contaminated and dirty hands).
  • A safe and effective vaccine is available to prevent hepatitis A.
