The West Asia crisis that began with the terrorist attacks by Hamas on 7 October 2023 has now continued for a year. Israel’s ground operations and aerial bombardment in Gaza and Lebanon have, by conservative estimates, killed more than 41,000 people. Gaza is all but flattened, but Hamas is believed to be still holding 97 of the original 251 hostages.

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) published a draft notification, proposing to notify 3,328 square kilometres around the Gir forest in Gujarat as an Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ). However, a revised draft reduced the scope of the protected area to 2,061 sq km. Forest officers said the reduction was needed to accommodate the basic needs of people living around the forest. Many commercial and infrastructure-building activities are prohibited inside ESZs.

The Maharashtra government announced a subsidy of Rs 50 per animal per day for cattlesheds (gaushalas) that take care of indigenous (desi) breeds of cows. The financial incentive will help preserve the state’s desi cow population, the Cabinet note said. The government has also declared the state’s indigenous cow breeds as “RajyaMata-Gomata”.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has approved the first mpox diagnostic test for emergency use, expanding access to medical testing. WHO approved Abbott Laboratories’ PCR diagnostic test, called the Alinity MPXV assay, which detects mpox virus DNA from skin swabs. This test is for use by trained lab personnel.

The Union Cabinet on 3 October 2024 approved a decade-old proposal to accord classical language status to Marathi. The government also named Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali as classical languages.
The UK agrees to return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, ending a long-standing colonial dispute. The decision follows rulings by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), UN General Assembly, and other international bodies. The islands were separated from Mauritius by the UK in 1965, prior to Mauritius' independence in 1968.

Recasting its flagship scheme on labelling of eco-friendly products, the Union Environment Ministry notified the Ecomark Rules, 2024, almost a year after its draft rules were notified. Launched in 1991, it is a voluntary and non-binding scheme which promotes labelling of household and consumer products based on the environmental and quality parameters.
