IIT-Madras campus inaugurated in Zanzibar

  • It will offer programs in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels
  • The inaugural batch comprises students from Zanzibar, mainland Tanzania, Nepal, and India. 
  • Of the students in the first batch, 40 percent are women.
  • This campus will benefit from an array of academic collaborations, including study abroad programs, internships with companies, and opportunities at the IIT-Madras campus in Chennai. 
  • It is open to students of all nationalities.
  • The selection process includes a screening test and interview.

  • Zanzibar is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Tanzania and is a semi-autonomous province of Tanzania.
  • Unguja and Pemba are the two main islands of the archipelago.
  • Zanzibar became a protectorate (not a colony) of Britain in 1890.
  • They speak ‘Swahili’ language.
