Doctors to get a unique ID in the National Medical Register

Context

A pilot assessment system regarding unique ID has been conducted in eight colleges nationwide, with the National Medical Commission consulting the stakeholders.

About:

  • The National Medical Register will provide a unique identification number for all doctors in India, expected to be launched by the end of next year.

  • The Indian Medical Register, created using data from state medical councils, will replace the current register with a new one that includes details like registration number, date of registration, place of work, medical qualifications, specialty, university, and year of passing, updated every five years.

  • This dynamic register will enable people to check their doctor's credentials.

National Medical Commission:

  • It is a statutory body established under the National Medical Commission Act of 2019.

  • The Medical Council of India (MCI), founded in 1934, was superseded by the National Medical Commission.

  • NMC guarantees high-quality medical education and training nationwide since it is dedicated to maintaining the highest standards in healthcare education.
