At the SCO meeting, India called for 'zero-tolerance' policy on terror

Recently, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers’ meeting was held in Asthana, Kazakhstan.

Key highlights of the meeting:

  • India emphasized the need to adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards terrorism in all its forms for the prosperity and development of the SCO member states.
  • A Joint Communique was issued after the meeting, in which the SCO Defence Ministers agreed, to develop the idea of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’, which is rooted in the ancient Indian philosophy of ‘vasudhaiva kutumbakam’.
  • India reiterated its steadfast commitment towards maintaining peace, stability and security in the SCO region.
  • India highlighted the concept of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) for the Indo-Pacific.

Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO):

  • The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an intergovernmental organization founded in Shanghai on 15 June 2001.
  • The SCO currently comprises 9 Member States: China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
  • It has 3 Observer States interested in acceding to full membership (Afghanistan, Belarus, and Mongolia) and 14 “Dialogue Partners” (Azerbaijan, Armenia, Bahrain, Egypt, Cambodia, Qatar, Kuwait, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Sri Lanka.).
  • Since its inception in 2001, the SCO has mainly focused on regional security issues, and its fight against regional terrorism, ethnic separatism and religious extremism.
  • To date, the SCO’s priorities also include regional development.
