The Maithili language is recognized as one of the 22nd languages of India It is one of the three main languages of Bihar State including Magdahi and Bhojpuri. It is the language of old Mithila ( the area of the ancient Videha, currently Tirhut). It is an Indo-Aryan language of the Indo-European language family. It is also the only Bihari language with a script of its own, named Tirhuta, this language has a vigorous history. 

Vidyapati, One of the earliest and most celebrated writers in Maithili, is noted for lyrics of love and devotion.
