Before you appear for the most prestigious exam of the country you must understand the marking scheme for it. This will help you to plan your preparation strategy. UPSC exam has three stages Prelims, Mains and Interview. These exams are conducted all through the year. The first exam is UPSC prelims. To appear in the next level one has to clear the first level. To appear in mains, one has to clear prelims. Candidate must have clarity about the exam pattern with its marking scheme. Let’s understand the marking schemes for all the three stages of UPSC exam:

UPSC prelims consist of two papers
- Paper I-General Studies
- Paper II-Civil services aptitude test(CSAT)

GS Paper 1 alone (GS Paper 2 Qualifying in nature) |
Prelims paper I which is General studies paper has 100 questions if 200 marks each question is of 2 marks. And for wrong answer there is negative marking with deduction of 1/3 marks
Prelims paper II(CSAT) has 80 questions with 200 marks total. To qualify this exam candidate has to score minimum 33% marks.1/3 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Things to remember:
- CSAT is a qualifying exam, which means that marks obtained in it will not be counted in final cut off.
- To clear prelims one has to score cut off marks in Paper I (100-125 marks) and 33% marks in paper II also.
- Prelims is just a screening test. Prelims marks will not be counted for the final merit list.
UPSC calendar for year 2020 has already been announced. Date mentioned for the starting of exam is 31st May 2020.
