The Union Public Service Commission, commonly abbreviated as UPSC, is India's premier central recruiting agency. It is responsible for appointments to and conducting examinations for All India services and group A & group B of Central services.

The reservation system prevails in every Government service in India. Weaker sections of the society have few privileges which are provided to them by the government considering their socio-economic conditions. IAS (Indian Administrative Service) exam is conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) which is India’s central recruiting agency, responsible for appointments for All India Services and Group A and Group B of Central Services. The government of India decided to provide reservations to weaker sections of the society in government jobs in UPSC. This reservation system has some reserved seats for SC/ST and OBC candidates which are referred to as quota.

In this article, you will get to know about the quota system for SC/ST candidates at different levels of the IAS exam. The government has made a lot of relaxations for SC/ST /OBC candidates in age, attempts, fees, etc. A stipulated amount is also provided to them on clearing each stage of the examination to help them in preparing for the next level.

SC/ST Quota in IAS exam is offered in terms of:

  1. Age relaxation
  2. Number of attempts
  3. Relaxation in Cut-off
  4. Reservation of seats

Age Relaxation:

Candidates of SC/ST category have relaxation up to 5 years, where the general category candidates are eligible to appear up to 32 years of age. SC/ST candidates can appear up to 37 years of age. HSC certificate is accepted as proof of date of birth. The age should fall in the given criteria as on the date of notification for the UPSC prelims exam.

Number OF Attempts:

The general candidates will get 6 attempts maximum. For SC/ST candidates there is no limit on the number of attempts. i.e. there are unlimited attempts for SC/ST students. OBC students can take 9 attempts.

Eligibility Criteria:

Minimum degree - Graduation From Any of the Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University Under Section-3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 or possess an equivalent qualification.

Relaxation in Cut-off:

Cutoff for IAS is determined on the factors such as the number of candidates who sit for the examination, the number of seats available for various posts, level of difficulty of examination, reservations, marking schemes, etc.

Total No. of Seats:

A general (Non EWS) category candidate has to compete only in 40.50 percent seats as 59.50 percent seats are reserved. So far 49.5 percent reservation was being provided to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) at the rate of 15 percent, 7.5 percent and 27 percent, respectively.
