Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Glasgow to attend the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), India has conveyed to the British Government this week.

Important Highlights

  • The decision comes even as climate negotiation delegations from the United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom travelled to Delhi to discuss India’s climate goals.
  • Modi and U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson are expected to jointly launch the “one world, one solar, one grid” initiative at the summit where at least 120 world leaders have confirmed their attendance.
  • The COP 26 UN Climate Change Conference, hosted by the UK in partnership with Italy, will take place from 31 October to 12 November 2021 in the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow, UK.

 

What is the Conference Of Parties (COP)?

  • The COP is the supreme decision-making body of the UNFCCC.
  • All States that are Parties to the Convention are represented at the COP, at which they review the implementation of the Convention and any other legal instruments that the COP adopts and take decisions necessary to promote the effective implementation of the Convention, including institutional and administrative arrangements.

 

About UNFCCC:

  • The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), signed in 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development also known as the Earth Summit.
  • India is among the few countries to have hosted the COP of all three
    • Rio conventions on climate change (UNFCCC),
    • Biodiversity (Convention on Biological Diversity) and
    • Land (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification).
  • The UNFCCC entered into force on 21st March 1994, and has been ratified by 197 countries.
  • It is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement. It is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.
