First Tribal Woman President of India- Droupadi Murmu

History has been created as the 15th president of the Republic of India will be Droupadi Murmu. She is a tribal leader from the eastern state of Odisha. She will occupy the nation's top position as a  women president for the second time in history after the former 12th president of India, Pratibha Patil.

After an election in which every Indian lawmaker and legislator showed up at the polls, the name of the 64-year- old was announced in the parliament on July 21.

With more than 64% of the legitimate ballots, Murmu won with a commanding lead beating the candidate in the opposition party, Yashwant Sinha.

When the Returning Officer stated that Murmu had already secured more than 53% of all legitimate votes after the third round, her victory was certain. After that, P C Mody, the returning officer, announced Murmu the winner after the lengthy, over ten-hour vote-counting procedure was complete. He highlighted that she received 6,76,803 votes against Sinha's 3,80,177, proclaiming her as the newly elected president of the Republic of India.

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Jharkhand are some of the states where votes were counted, alongside Andhra Pradesh, where Murmu secured virtually all of the votes

The BJP has been coveting Odisha's tribally dominant belt since it severed relations with the BJD in 2009, and by selecting her, it is also hoping to gain a foothold there. The general elections in 2024 also include voting in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, both of which boast substantial indigenous populations.

Murmu ran for the Rairangpur seat in the 2014 assembly, but the BJD candidate overtook her

Backstory

Previously serving as the governor of Jharkhand state in the year 2015-2021, Murmu entered into politics in the year 1997. She was chosen to represent Rairangpur in Odisha as an MLA twice, in 2000 and 2009, following serving as vice-president of the BJP Scheduled Tribes Morcha, a BJP-affiliated welfare organization.

In the Biju Janata Dal-BJP coalition government in Odisha, she worked as a minister as well, initially handling the portfolios of commerce and transport and subsequently switching to the department of aquaculture and biodiversity.

For the most part, Murmu's election was not unexpected. Although, the joy over her victory spread quickly throughout the state of Odisha.

The prime minister, Narendra Modi, said he is certain she would make a "wonderful president" amid her candidacy for the post.

Being born in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha on June 20, 1958, she entered national prominence after being chosen as the governing NDA's presidential contender in the July 18 elections

She has worked hard immensely to develop Odisha's infrastructure, including its ports and Santhali and Odia-speaking public speaking skills.

After losing her husband, two kids, mother, and brother in the space of only six years, between 2009 and 2015, the moderate Murmu, who is thought to be extraordinarily spiritual, discovered the Brahma Kumaris organization. She is an enthusiastic follower of their meditation practices.
