These insights empower terrorist groups to:

  1. Identify Targets: AI assists in pinpointing potential targets, vulnerabilities, and patterns of security forces.

In India, groups like The Resistance Front (TRF) and the Tehreeki-Milat-i-Islami (TMI) have already used fake videos and photos to manipulate specific groups, particularly young individuals susceptible to such deception.

  • AI-enabled Chat Platforms

About: AI-enabled communication platforms, primarily chat applications, offer potent tools for terrorists seeking to radicalize and recruit individuals. These platforms can use AI algorithms to send tailored messages that cater to potential recruits' interests and vulnerabilities.

Challenges: Using AI, platforms like "Rocket.Chat" have emerged as reliable tools for terrorist groups. Adopted by the Islamic State (IS) in December 2018 and later by al-Qaeda, these Slack-like interfaces facilitate encrypted conversations among jihadist groups and supporters. This allows for the dissemination of official and unofficial propaganda through privately-operated servers.

  • Weaponization of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs):

About: Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs), commonly known as drones, have seen widespread adoption across various industries due to technological advancements. Drones have become more affordable, accessible, and sophisticated, finding uses in agriculture, photography, and courier services.

Challenges: While drones have legitimate applications, there's a growing concern about their potential misuse by terrorist organizations. In 2021, twin drone-assisted explosions at the Indian Air Force's base in Jammu pointed to the involvement of the Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba.
