Decline in US overdose deaths

For the first time in decades, public health data from the United States show a decline in drug overdose deaths across the country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 111,802 overdose deaths were reported in the 12 months ending August 2023. This number fell to 93,087 in June 2024 (the last month for which data are available) — a 16.4% drop in a 10-month span. But what is leading to this trend is both promising and disturbing.

Krishna Das Prabhu held in Bangladesh

India has expressed “deep concern” over the arrest of Hindu leader Krishna Das Prabhu, who is associated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), in Bangladesh. He is also the spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote. Local media reports said that Prabhu, who has been leading rallies demanding security for Hindus, was arrested in Dhaka’s main airport while travelling to Chattogram in southeastern Bangladesh.

Constitution Day 2024

On 26 November 1949, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution of India, and it came into effect on 26 January 1950. While January 26 is celebrated as Republic Day, since 2015, 26 November is annually observed as the Constitution Day of India, or Samvidhan Divas.

‘One Nation One Subscription’ (ONOS)

The Union Cabinet approved a budgetary allocation of Rs 6,000 crore for an initiative called ‘One Nation One Subscription’ (ONOS) which the Centre hopes will help India’s higher education institutions (HEIs) access academic resources for the better. Aiming to centralise journal subscriptions for nearly 6,300 government-run institutions, ONOS seeks to provide equitable access to 13,000 scholarly journals under a single platform.
