Scientists have achieved the rare feat of getting a close-up shot of a star that is 1,60,000 light-years away from our galaxy and has a mass that is 2,000 times of the Sun. The first-ever, extreme close-up of the dying star reveals some crucial details about its activity and surrounding layers. Known as WOH G64, the massive star has been imaged with remarkable sharpness by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope Interferometer (ESO’s VLTI).

China has been the world’s biggest emitter for more than 15 years, and now accounts for well over 30% of annual global emissions. If China does not reduce its emissions, the world is unlikely to meet its emission reduction targets. As things stand, the world is nowhere close to the minimum emission cuts required for 2030 – at least 43% over 2019 levels. Estimates suggest that annual global emissions in 2030 would be barely 2% below 2019 levels.
