Haryana has become the third state of the country where every family in the rural areas has started getting clean tap water in their homes. Goa and Telangana are the two states which have already achieved this feat as part of the Centre’s Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).


  1. Besides these states, three Union Territories (UTs) of Andaman and Nicobar Islands; Puducherry; and Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli have also achieved 100 per cent of the ‘Har Ghar Jal’ Mission.
  2. According to sources in the Jal Shakti ministry, all schools, anganwadi centres (AWCs), health centres and the likes in Haryana are also having provision of tap water supply.
  3. Haryana was to become ‘Har Ghar Jal’ state by 2022 but the government decided to advance it.
  4. Prime Minister had announced JJM during his Independence Day speech on 15 August 2019 from the ramparts of the Red Fort.
  5. The mission envisages taking clean drinking tap water to every rural household, school, aanganwadi, ashrams and other such places by 2024.
  6. The prime minister reiterated that JJM was in sync with Mahatma Gandhi’s dream of ‘Gram Swaraj’ (village self-governance).
  7. The PM launched a dedicated fund to tap private donors to give a boost to the Mission through public participation.
