5 Books One Should Read For UPSC Interview Preparation

In today's fast pace of life, UPSC Students have no shortage of study material. Out of all, YouTube and eBooks are the easiest accessible medium. Though there is a lot of digital material available to UPSC students, nothing can degrade the importance of physical books. The reason is simple, physical books are detailed with examples and good for studying for long hours. E-Books are good for their mobile features.

If talking about physical books, libraries and bookstores can offer you hundreds of books for a single subject that can make you confused about what to pick and what not! Usually, students have the mentality that there is a lot to study for the civil services exam (which is correct to an extent) but the bundle of books may scare you with the bulk of material to read. To take you out of this situation of making choices of books, we are here listing 5 books that a UPSC aspirant must-read. If you don't want to regret later, go through this article on recommended books for UPSC along with the description as to why these books are useful.

India After Gandhi - The History of the World's Largest Democracy, By Ramchandra Guha

Most of the history books only tell the story up to the independence of India and a few other chapters about modernization and liberal reforms. But this is the book that brings to you everything about Indian politics after Independence. The book describes the journey of India, political as well as economical, post-independence.

The book has about 900 pages in its latest edition. So, you can't even think of reading it in one go. It is therefore good to plan in advance. The good thing is, the book is divided into various chapters, headings, and subheadings. This helps in the classification of the whole book into small parts. It is needless to say that students should make short and self-notes while reading the book. Try to remember as much as possible. There is another book you can take as a reference. This is "India Since Independence" By Bipan Chandra.

Indian Polity By M Laxmikanth

Polity is a very important subject for the UPSC prelims and mains exam. Every student should add this book by Laxmikanth in his library for UPSC. Polity is actually considered to be a tough subject by the majority of UPSC students. Although, just reading Laximnath's book on Polity won't assure you good marks in the subject but if you read it at least 3 times, you will understand the plinth of Indian Polity and that will help you a lot in making this so called tough subject easy. It is for this reason that UPSC students are advised to get started with this book before anything else.

When you open this book, you will be quite confused about where to start from and how to finish such a lengthy book. Well, the trick is simple. Just start from one reading, then another reading and again go for the third round of reading. At last, make notes of the important things that you find important from the examination point of view.

Indian Economy By Ramesh Singh

The approach and method of writing of Ramesh Singh are quite similar to that of M Laxminath. We would not say that it's the ultimate book that you should refer to for Economics but yes it is guaranteed that all your concepts will be clear once you finish reading this book. As we have suggested above for Polity, for economics also, students should make 3 back to the back reading of the whole book/chapter wise. The best part of Ramesh Singh's book is that it already contains short notes at the end of the chapter. These notes are a summary of the full chapter in fewer words.

Spectrum for Modern Indian History

Knowledge of Indian history is a must crack UPSC exam. It's part of the syllabus. Everything given in the book is very precise yet relevant from the exam point of view. The book develops the ability to understand the history of modern India in the right way.

Indian Geography by Khullar and Physical Geography by Savindra Singh

For learning geography, these books seem more organized than NCERT books. The books are well written with a practical approach to the subject along with statistics of all the data that are complementary to the information shared. Maps and diagrams in the subject of geography hold great importance. After reading these books on Geography, you probably don't need any other book.

All these books are very useful as per the trend. We don't claim that reading these books, you will definitely clear your exams as a lot of other factors are also involved. The list is only suggestive.
