Why do UPSC Candidates Get Rejected in Interviews?

The most important and challenging stage of UPSC Civil services examination is the Personality test also known as Interview round. After successfully clearing first two stages of the UPSC - Prelims and Mains, Interview round is the most crucial round. The final list is prepared on the scores of all the three rounds. Most of the times Interview round is where candidates get rejected. There could be many reasons for a candidate to be getting rejected but before that the anatomy of the interview process needs to be understood. Many candidates are there who repeatedly do good in mains and clear mains but do not clear interview round and fail to make their place in final list.

Interview carries 275 marks out of total 2025 and these 275 marks can be life changing. The approx duration for the interview is about 30 minutes. These 30 minutes are for the interviewer to check whether the candidate has the potential to demonstrate good administrative skills. Marks of mains and interview are the deciding factors for ranking. CSE interview is not a knowledge test as it is commonly believed but it is a personality test. Candidate’s approach to a particular question is observed.

A candidate’s marks in mains certainly speaks for his/her preparation and knowledge. A common belief is that questions need to answered subjectively in interview but as a matter of fact interview board marks the behavior and approach of the candidate towards the given situation or the question which should be certainly objective and to the point.

Most of the times candidates are asked questions from their detailed application form which usually revolves around candidate’s place of birth, hobbies, state issues, national issues etc. As they will be selecting candidates for IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS so whether the candidate’s attitude is national or regional needs to be judged. Interview panel observes candidate’s response to the question.

It is advisable to avoid memorizing facts and figures for the interview. Rather having a balanced attitude towards any issue is required. Never stick to your region rather know the national issues and try to resolve any issue with the approach of a nationalist. Being broad minded, sensitive and having concern for the weaker sections of the society will make you a successful candidate.

Interview is definitely a game changer but the whole selection process includes your scores in mains. Thus the result of the candidate is the aggregate score of CSE mains and interview.

UPSC maintains a standard while selecting candidates and the most interesting and crucial one is interview round. Interview in UPSC can also be termed as “Personality Test”. It is the test of general knowledge of the candidate.

Your body language will speak for you in interview as through this stage the interview board will see your personality traits which are required for being a good civil servant. Every question asked in interview is designed so that interview board can judge your personality. An appealing and pleasing personality with presence of mind and having knowledge of all administrative rules are the traits of a civil servant. These also include mental alertness, honesty, leadership qualities etc. Try and inculcate these traits to get selected and be a successful civil servant.

Final tip to get selected in UPSC interview is to be honest, confident, polite and be an Indian inside out and have a national outlook rather than confining yourself to your region.
