Lingayat (Veerashaiva)

Veerashaiva Mahasabha has urged the community members not to describe themselves as Hindu in the forthcoming population census or caste census.

  • This was among the eight resolutions adopted by delegates to the Veerashaiva Mahasabha rally in Davangere.

The Recent resolutions paased in Veerashaiva Mahasabha:

  • All community members were told to avoid the use of the term Hindu for describing their religion in the next census. They should shun names of sub-castes. 
    • Morever, they should only use terms Veerashaiva or Lingayat to describe themselves. This is for the good of society and to tell the world about the specific numbers of our community.
  • Secondly, the resolutions included a demand for a fresh caste census (need to be conducted scientifically) while the State government should not accept the Kantharaj report
    • The socio-economic survey of the various communities or caste census in the State is eight years old and its contents are believed to have been leaked. 
    • A fresh census should enumerate social, educational and economic status of all castes, including the sub-castes of the Veerashaiva Lingayat groups.
  • Thirdly, the rally urged the State government to send a proposal to the Union government recommending Central OBC status to all sub-communities of Veerashaiva Lingayats. This will help the millions of community members who live in poverty.
  • Fourthly, the State government should declare Basavanna to be the cultural leader of the State. His ideology is eternally relevant to the world, the mahasabha said.

Who are the Lingayats and why they want a minority status?

  • The Lingayats are a dominant community who make up nearly 17% of Karnataka’s population. 
  • The Lingayats, classified as a Hindu sub- caste called Veerashaiva Lingayats, are essentially followers of the 12th-century philosopher Saint Basavanna, who started a movement to help sections of society break away from the chains of caste. 
  • The Lingayats are strict monotheists. They enjoin the worship of only one God, namely, Linga (Shiva).
  • The Veerashaiva Lingayats are an amalgamation of the followers of Basavanna’s teachings and Veerashaivas who follow more traditional Hindu practices.

About Nagamohan Das Committee (2018):

  • Earlier the Karnataka State government constituted an expert committee under Justice Nagamohan Das to study their demand for a separate religion tag.
  • It had recommended positive signal considering Lingayat’s plea to be considered a separate religion.
  • Further, it gave a big boost to the Lingayat community’s demand for a minority-status tag. The suggestions were accepted and subsequently the cabinet gave its nod to the recommendation of separate religion for the Lingayat community today.
