Kargil Day or Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed to mark the end of the Kargil War. The war that lasted about two months was fought mainly in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan. Both sides lost many soldiers and the war came to an end when on July 26, 1999 India fought and took command of the outposts that had been lost to Pakistani intruders. Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed not just in the Kargil-Dras sector but also in New Delhi where the Prime Minister of India pays homage to the war heroes at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate.

On this day July 24, S. Vijayalakshmi (born 25 March 1979)won the title of first woman Grandmaster of India. It is a record which will never be challenged as other women aspirants can only follow her achievement.Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi worked in Indian Airlines became the first woman Grandmaster of the country after she drew her ninth round game with Wipro's P Harikrishna in the Wipro international GMs chess championship.

Chandra Shekhar  Azad was born Chandra Shekhar  Tiwari, to Pandit Sita Ram Tiwari and Jagrani Devi on July 23, 1906 in Bhavra village in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh. Chandra Shekhar grew up with Bhils who inhabited the area and learnt wrestling, swimming along with archery. He was an ardent follower of Lord Hanuman from a young age.

Chewang Norphel, a 79-year old retired civil engineer, has always been a solution provider. In 1966 when he was posted in Zanskar, one of the most backward and remote areas in Ladakh, as Sub Divisional Officer. He, along with his team, had to construct school buildings, bridges, canals, roads etc. in that area.

The present form of the national flag was adopted in the meeting of Constituent Assembly on 22nd of July in 1947. The present Indian Flag was declared as the official flag by the authority of India. As Indian Flag contains three colours, it is also called as Tiranga. It is based on Swaraj flag (means flag of Indian National Congress, designed by PingaliVenkayya).

Mangal Pandey was an Indian soldier who played a major role in inciting the Indian rebellion of 1857.Mangal Pandey was born on 19 July 1827 in Nagwa, Ballia, Uttar Pradesh into a high-caste Bhumihar Brahmin family. His father Divakar Pandey was a peasant. Mangal Pandey had a sister who died during the famine of 1830. Pandey grew up to be an ambitious young man.

On July 18th1947, the India Independence Act 1947 was given the royal assent and came into force. The India Independence Act was a United Kingdom act of parliament which separated British India into two new dominions of India and Pakistan. Pakistan came into being on August 14th1947and India on August 15th of the same year.

The Asian Athletics culminated with India topped the charts. After getting off to a flier the Indian contingent at the 2017 Asian Athletics Championships maintained their momentum and finally went on to secure a historic tally of 29 medals. India won five gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
